THE WOODLANDS, TX—November 16, 2015—Local business owner Donna Gylling and her staff at The Woodlands Kid to Kid store were honored with the Kid to Kid Store of the Month award for October. Through this award, the Kid to Kid franchise recognizes one of its 115 locations across the United States, Canada, and Portugal for outstanding achievement.

Donna began her store in February 2005 when her two girls were ages 4 and 8. She says she’d always been a big resale shopper, and that she received lots of compliments on the outfits she found for her girls. “People were always surprised when they found out that my kids wore resale clothes,” Donna recalls. “After I opened a Kid to Kid store, my friends would often say, ‘Oh, this is what resale looks like?’”

Kid to Kid of The Woodlands buys an average of 2,200 gently used children’s items per week from the community, paying its customers for their clothes, baby equipment, toys, books, shoes, and maternity wear. The store then sells these items at up to 70% off of their original retail prices. By helping parents and grandparents recycle their kids’ outgrown stuff, Kid to Kid of The Woodlands provides value to those who sell and to those who shop for their growing kids. In addition, this reduces the amount of waste in the community.

Over the last decade, Donna raised her family as she built a successful store. “My work never gets boring,” Donna reflects. “It really surprises me that even after ten and a half years, every day is something new.” Owning a store is hard work, she says, but it gives her the flexibility to actively participate in her daughters’ lives. She is grateful for a fantastic staff that shares her vision for providing excellent customer service. “The staff here truly wants to provide the best for our customers. We work to offer our community an experience that can’t be found anywhere else, and our staff does a fantastic job.” Remarkably, the first employee Donna hired at Kid to Kid is still faithfully working in her store. Donna and her team are thrilled to be awarded the Kid to Kid Store of the Month.

PITTSBURGH, PA—October 15, 2015—Local business owners Whitney and Mary Jo Hayes, along with their staff at the Pittsburgh Kid to Kid store, were honored this month with the Kid to Kid Store of the Month award. Through this award, the Kid to Kid franchise recognizes outstanding achievement exhibited by one of its 112 locations across the United States, Canada, and Portugal. Although the Pittsburgh Kid to Kid has only been open for less than a year, it is already proving to be a great success for the community it serves.

When asked what factors contributed to the store’s success, Whitney responded that first and foremost it has been “hard work.” The Kid to Kid store in Pittsburgh buys an average of 459 gently used items each day from the community, paying its customers more than $20,000 on average each month for their children’s clothes, baby equipment, toys, books, shoes, and maternity wear. The store then turns around and sells these items at up to 70% off of their original retail prices. By helping parents and grandparents recycle their outgrown kids stuff, Kid to Kid of Pittsburgh provides value both to those who sell and to those who shop for their growing kids as it reduces the amount of waste in the community.

Whitney and Mary Jo are creating a customer experience that is driving positive feedback from those they serve. One customer, upon first interacting with Whitney in the store, stated that she “could not have been nicer or more helpful.” Another customer, after trying out the store for a few months, concluded, “I must say I have never been disappointed… I’ve bought over $600 worth of [clothes] for under $65.” In addition, the Hayes have built a fantastic team. According to one customer, “The staff is so friendly, which makes the experience of shopping 10 times better… I don’t think I can say one bad thing about this place!” The store’s clientele is not failing to notice the store’s key strengths in providing service and driving value.

This month, the Kid to Kid franchise awarded the August Store of the Month designation to Dustin and Mandy Taylor, owners of the St. George Kid to Kid. Through the Store of the Month award, the franchise recognizes particular excellence demonstrated by one of its 112 locations across the United States, Canada, and Portugal. During the month of August, the St. George Kid to Kid showed an impressive sales increase for a tenured Kid to Kid store, as well as a 38% increase in the number of items it purchased from parents in the local community.

Kid to Kid buys and sells gently used children’s items, such as clothing, shoes, toys, books, and baby equipment, as well as maternity apparel. According to the Taylors, what their customers love most about the store is that they can purchase great items in like-new condition that are otherwise unavailable in St. George. “There are not a lot of places to shop in St. George,” says Mandy, “so usually you have to shop online or drive to Las Vegas [to buy specialty children’s items]. Many parents get these items outside of St. George, use them a few times, and then bring them to us—making our store a place where people can see and feel the items before they buy them.” Snow boots, for example, are a great selling item at Kid to Kid, because it’s one of the few places in St. George where parents can bring their kids to actually try on the boots before they buy them.

Nine years ago, Dustin and Mandy hadn’t even considered owning a children’s store. They were looking into opening an assisted living business, and came across Kid to Kid in a list of businesses for sale in the area. What attracted them most to the business, according to Dustin, was the recycle aspect—the  sustainability and waste reduction were what convinced him to buy the store. “The Deseret Industries store refers people to us for the things like baby equipment that they would throw away,” Mandy adds, “so it’s nice to keep that out of the waste, and help somebody buy it who couldn’t otherwise afford it.”

On top of benefiting parents who shop and sell, the St. George Kid to Kid does a lot to serve in its community. The store gives clothes it can’t sell to the IHC Foundation, and it donates to the local YMCA and the Children’s Museum each time customers choose not to take a bag with their purchase. It also donates resources to support Meals on Wheels for pets, the Parent Teacher Association, and local schools. According to a member of Kid to Kid’s advisory board, “Dustin and Mandy are very aware of what’s happening in their community and are constantly looking for ways to be involved in areas that will make a difference.”

The Taylors attributed the success of their store to their fantastic staff, who they said are constantly willing to go above and beyond the call of duty, and to their diverse product offering.  “Even moms who typically don’t shop resale will come into our store simply because they know Kid to Kid has the best bow selection in town,” explains Mandy.  They offer much more than just used clothes, and have quite an impressive selection of new items, including hair accessories and toys.

IMG_0898 ARVADA, CO—August 20, 2015— Kid to Kid Arvada, Colorado has been awarded Store of the Month in July by the Kid to Kid Franchise System. The franchise offered its congratulations to owners Todd and Miriam Frick and their team in Arvada on their second award as the store was previously awarded Store of the Month in October of 2013. The Fricks attribute their success to their well-trained and hard-working staff that took on extra responsibility as the Fricks spent a large portion of their time getting their third business, Uptown Cheapskate Centennial, up and running.

Todd and Miriam gave special recognition to their manager, Amanda Funnell. According to Miriam, “Amanda is truly an amazing leader. She fosters such a great work atmosphere that the staff is happy and clearly having fun while they work.” Amanda’s focus on training and efficiency, as well as building team morale, encouraged each employee to engage in the business’s success. This, combined with a successful Semi-Annual Sale, led to a 20 percent increase in sales in July.

“It is a tremendous achievement for a single store to win Store of the Month twice in two years,” said Shauna Sloan, founder of Kid to Kid. “The team in Arvada does a fantastic job, and they deserve it.” Kid to Kid, an upscale resale franchise for kids’ clothing, toys and baby equipment, now has more than 100 locations in the United States, Portugal and Canada.

The Fricks are now proud owners of Kid to Kid Aurora, Kid to Kid Arvada, and the franchise’s sister concept for teen and young adult apparel, Uptown Cheapskate Centennial.

“The Fricks are great examples of both of our franchises, and we appreciate the great work they do,” said Sloan.

Kid to Kid in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS, NV—May 15, 2015—Kid to Kid Franchise proudly awarded its Store of the Month award for April to the owner of Kid to Kid in Las Vegas, Fumiko MacPherson and her daughter, Naomi MacPherson. The Las Vegas Kid to Kid store was selected from more than 100 franchisees across the U.S. and Portugal for their outstanding 85 percent increase in sales during their first month in their new 4,000 square foot space.

“Fumiko is like the little engine that could,” said Shauna Sloan, president and founder of Kid to Kid. “She has been plugging away for ten years in a small, 2,600 sq. ft space, posting impressive sales and profits despite repeated challenges and setbacks that stemmed from how hard Las Vegas was hit by the recession. In April, she was finally able to move into a larger store.  Fumiko and her all-female staff moved the entire store by themselves. This move was a classic demonstration of the power and strength of women!”

Fumiko and Naomi MacPherson

Originally from Northern California, Fumiko and her husband were looking for an opportunity to own a business they could call their own. They discovered the Kid to Kid franchise and learned about a store in Las Vegas that was available for sale.

“As soon as I found out about Kid to Kid, I was hooked,” said Fumiko. “I love the idea of recycling and getting paid for items you no longer need. Plus, it’s fun working with all the cute kids clothing and items. As an owner for ten years, I’ve gotten to know many of my customers and have enjoyed watching their kids grow. I’m so happy to be making an impact in so many people’s lives by helping them save and earn money.”

Fumiko’s daughter, Naomi, was basically raised at Kid to Kid and is now a buyer and store manager. “I love that there is a ton of training available to all Kid to Kid owners and staff,” said Naomi. “The franchise truly cares about their franchisees and offering them all the tools necessary for them and their business to grow.”

Fumiko gives credit to her hard working staff and her daughter for making her store a success. “I am so honored that we won the Store of the Month award!” said Fumiko. “I’d like to thank all of my loyal customers for continued support, even during difficult times. Without them and my dedicated employees, the store wouldn’t be where it is today. Also, my daughter has been a true inspiration by taking on so much at such an early age.”

Kid to Kid Boise, ID

Kid to Kid Boise, ID

BOISE, ID—March 18, 2015— The Kid to Kid franchise proudly awarded its Store of the Month award for February to Bill Long, owner of Kid to Kid in Boise, ID for outstanding increases in sales, invoices and customer satisfaction.

The Boise Kid to Kid store was selected from over 100 franchisees across the country and in Europe to earn the Store of the Month award. “February was a tough month for all retailers with harsh weather across much of the country, but Bill and his team defied the odds, achieving a 27 percent increase in sales,” commented Shauna Sloan, founder of Kid to Kid.

“Running a successful franchise takes a strong team, and my manager, Wendy, keeps ours focused on the things that matter,” said Bill. “Our customers love shopping and selling at our store because my team makes sure we are stocked with items their kids need, and makes it easy to sell what their kids have outgrown.”

This is Bill’s second franchise experience. He previously was a franchise owner of an Eat-A-Burger restaurant in Boise. Bill’s wife discovered Kid to Kid while shopping for their children, and immediately fell in love with the resale concept. In 2004, Bill opened his first Kid to Kid and left the fast food industry.

“My wife saw that there was a need for a high quality used clothing store in our area,” Bill stated. “That’s why we decided to become a Kid to Kid franchisee over ten years ago. Next month, we will be expanding into a larger facility so we can continue helping Boise families.”

The new Kid to Kid store is located in Meridian, ID, a suburb of Boise, with a planned open date of April 30th. It will be paired with a new Uptown Cheapskate store, a sister concept to Kid to Kid specializing in gently used trendy fashions for teens and young adults.

A growing number of franchise owners either own multiple Kid to Kid stores or own a combination of Kid to Kid and Uptown Cheapskate stores. “I can apply a lot of what I learned from when I first opened my Kid to Kid location to my new Kid to Kid and Uptown Cheapskate stores,” continued Bill. “And with the franchise systems already in place and marketing materials readily available, it just makes sense to expand and grow.”

Grapevine store front GRAPEVINE, TX—The Kid to Kid franchise proudly awarded its December Store of the Month award to Brittany Tucker, owner of the Kid to Kid located at 2100 W. Northwest Hwy., Suite #218 in Grapevine, TX for outstanding increase in sales, as well as improvements to store systems.

The Grapevine location was selected from more than 100 Kid to Kid children’s resale stores across the U.S. and Portugal because of an impressive 46 percent increase in sales and 44 percent increase in invoices over the previous year.

“The store’s terrific improvements over the past couple months are a result of implementing significant operational changes,” said the store’s corporate support representative, Jeff Kinsel. Brittany placed a stronger focus on turning product more quickly by consistently checking pricing, and keeping the racks full.

Brittany’s passion and dedication to her store has made the franchise location the best it’s ever been, and she has hopes of opening another store in the future. “I love the fact that we help families by paying them for stuff their kids have outgrown as well as help them find items at affordable prices – it’s a win-win,” Brittany said. “Owning a Kid to Kid, like any other business is not easy and takes a lot of learning, but it’s so worth it!”

Kid to Kid Grapevine, TX

GRAPEVINE, TX—Jan. 27, 2015—The Kid to Kid franchise proudly awarded its December Store of the Month award to Brittany Tucker, owner of the Kid to Kid located at 2100 W.

Brittany started her career with Kid to Kid at just 16 years of age. She began working at the Arlington Kid to Kid location, and fell in love with the Kid to Kid concept, the people and the retail community. Five years later, Brittany had worked her way up the ranks and learned about a Kid to Kid franchise for sale.

“Thinking that it wouldn’t be possible, I over-looked the opportunity, but my mom didn’t,” said Brittany. “I guess in this case you can say it pays off to be an only child, because my mom quickly made my dream a reality.” Brittany and her mother, Theresa Tucker purchased the Kid to Kid store in Irving, TX and it continued to grow as Brittany handled the managerial side, and Theresa took care of the finances. In August 2013, the store relocated to Grapevine, and has experienced steady growth since the move.

The Grapevine Kid to Kid location is now one of 16 stores in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. “Although the DFW market is quite competitive, I don’t look at it as much as a competition between stores, but more as a team effort to attract as many loyal customers as possible so each of us can grow year after year,” said Brittany. One of the main ways her store grew last year was through staff training and more defined policies. They focused on the customer – both those who sold product and those who were shopping, and did their best to process all items customers brought in to sell while they were still in the store. This allowed customers to shop while they waited, making it much more convenient to sell and shop, and saving them an extra trip.

Kid to Kid in Gilbert, AZ

GILBERT, AZ—Dec. 31, 2014—The Kid to Kid franchise proudly awarded its Kid to Kid Store of the Month for November to Erica Gentile for outstanding performance and growth of her Kid to Kid store in Gilbert, AZ.

The Gilbert Kid to Kid store was selected to earn the Store of the Month award because of an impressive 56% increase over the prior year. “November was the best month so far this year for the 100 plus stores in the Kid to Kid franchise system, with an average store increase of 15%.  Gilbert’s increase was almost 4 times that average,” commented Kid to Kid franchise founder, Shauna Sloan.

After receiving her MBA from Arizona State University, Erica opened the Kid to Kid store in Gilbert in partnership with her brother, Brian Etheridge. Both Erica and Brian had always wanted to be business owners and were just waiting for the right opportunity. “After doing my research, I decided Kid to Kid was a great choice because despite the bad economy, parents would always need clothing and supplies for their kids,” said Erica. “I also think that during the last recession, resale shopping became something to be proud of as opposed to having a negative stigma.”

Shortly after having her first child, Erica opened a second Kid to Kid store in Chandler. As a busy mother and owner of two Kid to Kid stores, Erica has proven that raising a family while running a business successfully is possible within a franchise system. “Erica is an excellent manager, juggling two stores and a growing family,” explained Amy Lofgreen, Franchise Support Representative at Kid to Kid.

The franchise currently has 16 multi-store owners that either own multiple Kid to Kid stores, or a combination of Kid to Kid and Uptown Cheapskate (sister resale franchise for teens and young adults) stores. That number is growing rapidly, as owners take advantage of the synergy of multi-store ownership.  “It is really helpful to be able to split the cost of marketing between my two stores, which makes it possible to tell more people about the benefits of buying and selling at Kid to Kid,” explained Erica.

Erica credits her success to a hard working staff that goes the extra mile to assist customers and create a fun shopping experience. “We’ve made it our top priority to help customers as soon as they walk in the door and to help find what they are looking for before they reach the check-out counter,” Erica continued. “As a team, we’ve grown and become more productive and I think that helped us in achieving Store of the Month.”

To learn more about Kid to Kid in Gilbert, visit their website or find them on Facebook for recent photos and updates. For more information about owning a Kid to Kid store, click here.

“When you own a Kid to Kid you don’t wear many hats, you wear every hat – but it’s worth it because you are creating value in your community by creating job opportunities and helping families recycle and save,” commented Erica. “Going with an established franchise, to me, is the way to go. Even though you pay a small percentage of your sales to the franchise, the support you get from the other owners and the franchise itself makes it worth it.”

Kid to Kid Almada, Portugal

Kid to Kid Almada, Portugal

Almada, Portugal—Nov. 17, 2014—The Kid to Kid franchise has selected the Kid to Kid store in Almada, Portugal as the winner of the Store of the Month for October. Kid to Kid Almada was selected from more than 100 stores based on outstanding performance representing the Kid to Kid brand. “The Almada Kid to Kid store is not only a model of the franchise in Portugal, but for the whole franchise system” reports franchise founder Shauna Sloan.

Almada franchise owner, Susana Pedroso, is a mother of two young children, and the owner/manager of two Kid to Kid stores located in a suburban area of Lisbon. Her second store in Seixal opened just a few months ago and is also experiencing terrific success. “Susana is an excellent manager and demonstrates an amazing work ethic as she leads her team to buy efficiently, keep the racks full, and turning product quickly,” said Ana Pinheiro, Kid to Kid’s Master Franchisor for Portugal. “Susana has done a great job cross-promoting between the Almada and Seixal stores, and developing common customers who buy and sell in both stores. This has resulted in success in both locations, and contributes to Kid to Kid being the second most recognized children’s brand in all of Portugal!”

Portugal stores are typically much smaller than the average 3,500 sq. ft store in the U.S. However, that hasn’t stopped the Almada and Seixal locations from being successful. When asked why both stores are doing so well, Pinheiro responded, “In my opinion there is no secret. They just follow the [franchise] system rules.”

Prior to Kid to Kid entering into the country of Portugal in 2003, the resale concept was completely new. There were virtually no thrift stores, yard sales, or classified ads, and buying “used” was not an option for the typical family. Since then, the franchise has experienced tremendous growth. There are now 21 stores throughout Portugal with only a few potential locations still available. “With Portugal virtually sold out, our next area of growth in Europe is into Spain,” comments Sloan.
