LAS VEGAS, NV—Kid to Kid Franchise proudly awarded its Store of the Month award for April to the owner of Kid to Kid in Las Vegas, Fumiko MacPherson and her daughter, Naomi MacPherson. The Las Vegas Kid to Kid store was selected from more than 100 franchisees across the U.S. and Portugal for their outstanding 85 percent increase in sales during their first month in their new 4,000 square foot space.
“Fumiko is like the little engine that could,” said Shauna Sloan, president and founder of Kid to Kid. “She has been plugging away for ten years in a small, 2,600 sq. ft space, posting impressive sales and profits despite repeated challenges and setbacks that stemmed from how hard Las Vegas was hit by the recession. In April, she was finally able to move into a larger store. Fumiko and her all-female staff moved the entire store by themselves. This move was a classic demonstration of the power and strength of women!”
Originally from Northern California, Fumiko and her husband were looking for an opportunity to own a business they could call their own. They discovered the Kid to Kid franchise and learned about a store in Las Vegas that was available for sale.
“As soon as I found out about Kid to Kid, I was hooked,” said Fumiko. “I love the idea of recycling and getting paid for items you no longer need. Plus, it’s fun working with all the cute kids clothing and items. As an owner for ten years, I’ve gotten to know many of my customers and have enjoyed watching their kids grow. I’m so happy to be making an impact in so many people’s lives by helping them save and earn money.”
Fumiko’s daughter, Naomi, was basically raised at Kid to Kid and is now a buyer and store manager. “I love that there is a ton of training available to all Kid to Kid owners and staff,” said Naomi. “The franchise truly cares about their franchisees and offering them all the tools necessary for them and their business to grow.”
Fumiko gives credit to her hard working staff and her daughter for making her store a success. “I am so honored that we won the Store of the Month award!” said Fumiko. “I’d like to thank all of my loyal customers for continued support, even during difficult times. Without them and my dedicated employees, the store wouldn’t be where it is today. Also, my daughter has been a true inspiration by taking on so much at such an early age.”
WILMINGTON, NC—Kid to Kid Franchise proudly awarded its Store of the Month award for March to Salem Bartlett, owner of Kid to Kid in Wilmington, North Carolina. The Wilmington Kid to Kid store was selected from more than 100 franchisees across the U.S. and Portugal for their 42 percent increase in year over year sales. “In a month where apparel retail was flat or down across the country, it’s impressive for a store to show that much improvement,” comments franchise founder Shauna Sloan. “Salem is very engaged with the franchise, and serves on our Advisory Board. She’s a great example of how well the system works.”
Bartlett is a resident of Wilmington where she and her husband are busy raising their seven-year-old daughter. Both Bartlett and her husband grew up working within their family businesses, so owning a store of their own seems natural. “My grandparents, parents and in-laws were all business owners,” said Bartlett. “When my corporate career stalled, that entrepreneurial spirit pulled at me. Still, the landscape is pretty competitive and I knew I would not want to go out there completely on my own. I knew if I found the right franchise, the risk would be significantly lessened.”
Prior to becoming a franchisee, Bartlett was a regular shopper at the Kid to Kid store in Apex, “I loved the store as a shopper and started thinking about what it would be like to be an owner too,” said Bartlett. “Once I started exploring the Kid to Kid franchise, I was hooked! I could tell that the franchise had developed systems that work, and that they were 100 percent invested in their franchisees’ success.”
Bartlett credits her achievement to her dedicated staff. “I am ecstatic that we won the Store of the Month award!” said Bartlett. “My team has worked so hard to make this store the success it is today. I could not have kept going without this amazing staff. This award truly goes to them!”
BOISE, ID— The Kid to Kid franchise proudly awarded its Store of the Month award for February to Bill Long, owner of Kid to Kid in Boise, ID for outstanding increases in sales, invoices and customer satisfaction.
The Boise Kid to Kid store was selected from over 100 franchisees across the country and in Europe to earn the Store of the Month award. “February was a tough month for all retailers with harsh weather across much of the country, but Bill and his team defied the odds, achieving a 27 percent increase in sales,” commented Shauna Sloan, founder of Kid to Kid.
“Running a successful franchise takes a strong team, and my manager, Wendy, keeps ours focused on the things that matter,” said Bill. “Our customers love shopping and selling at our store because my team makes sure we are stocked with items their kids need, and makes it easy to sell what their kids have outgrown.”
This is Bill’s second franchise experience. He previously was a franchise owner of an Eat-A-Burger restaurant in Boise. Bill’s wife discovered Kid to Kid while shopping for their children, and immediately fell in love with the resale concept. In 2004, Bill opened his first Kid to Kid and left the fast food industry. “My wife saw that there was a need for a high quality used clothing store in our area,” Bill stated. “That’s why we decided to become a Kid to Kid franchisee over ten years ago. Next month, we will be expanding into a larger facility so we can continue helping Boise families.”
The new Kid to Kid store is located in Meridian, ID, a suburb of Boise, with a planned open date of April 30th. It will be paired with a new Uptown Cheapskate store, a sister concept to Kid to Kid specializing in gently used trendy fashions for teens and young adults.
GRAPEVINE, TX—The Kid to Kid franchise proudly awarded its December Store of the Month award to Brittany Tucker, owner of the Kid to Kid located at 2100 W. Northwest Hwy., Suite #218 in Grapevine, TX for outstanding increase in sales, as well as improvements to store systems.
The Grapevine location was selected from more than 100 Kid to Kid children’s resale stores across the U.S. and Portugal because of an impressive 46 percent increase in sales and 44 percent increase in invoices over the previous year.
“The store’s terrific improvements over the past couple months are a result of implementing significant operational changes,” said the store’s corporate support representative, Jeff Kinsel. Brittany placed a stronger focus on turning product more quickly by consistently checking pricing, and keeping the racks full.
Brittany’s passion and dedication to her store has made the franchise location the best it’s ever been, and she has hopes of opening another store in the future. “I love the fact that we help families by paying them for stuff their kids have outgrown as well as help them find items at affordable prices – it’s a win-win,” Brittany said. “Owning a Kid to Kid, like any other business is not easy and takes a lot of learning, but it’s so worth it!”
GILBERT, AZ—The Kid to Kid franchise proudly awards the Kid to Kid Store of the Month for November to owner Erica Gentile of the Gilbert Kid to Kid store. The Store of the Month award is given to a franchise store that has shown outstanding performance and customer satisfaction.
The Gilbert Kid to Kid was selected from more than 100 stores because of an impressive 56 percent increase in sales over last year, as well as a significant increase in the amount of product bought from customers.
Erica, owner of both the Gilbert and Chandler Kid to Kid locations, credits much of the increase of sales to having a great selection of merchandise available. “We have really focused on keeping our racks organized and full of high-quality merchandise so our customers have a variety of items to choose from,” said Erica. “By offering more choices, our shoppers have a much better experience.”
Erica thanks her hard working staff for going the extra mile to assist customers and creating a fun shopping experience. “We’ve made it our top priority to help customers as soon as they walk in the door to help find what they are looking for BEFORE they reach the check-out counter,” Erica continued. “As a team, we’ve grown and become more productive – and as you see, it’s made a huge difference.”
ALMADA, PORTUGAL—The Kid to Kid franchise has selected the Kid to Kid store in Almada, Portugal as the winner of the Store of the Month for October. Kid to Kid Almada was selected from more than 100 stores based on outstanding performance representing the Kid to Kid brand. “The Almada Kid to Kid store is not only a model of the franchise in Portugal, but for the whole franchise system” reports franchise founder Shauna Sloan.
Almada franchise owner, Susana Pedroso, is a mother of two young children, and the owner/manager of two Kid to Kid stores located in a suburban area of Lisbon. Her second store in Seixal opened just a few months ago and is also experiencing terrific success. “Susana is an excellent manager and demonstrates an amazing work ethic as she leads her team to buy efficiently, keep the racks full, and turning product quickly,” said Ana Pinheiro, Kid to Kid’s Master Franchisor for Portugal. “Susana has done a great job cross-promoting between the Almada and Seixal stores, and developing common customers who buy and sell in both stores. This has resulted in success in both locations, and contributes to Kid to Kid being the second most recognized children’s brand in all of Portugal!”
Portugal stores are typically much smaller than the average 3,500 sq. ft store in the U.S. However, that hasn’t stopped the Almada and Seixal locations from being successful. When asked why both stores are doing so well, Pinheiro responded, “In my opinion there is no secret. They just follow the [franchise] system rules.”
Prior to Kid to Kid entering into the country of Portugal in 2003, the resale concept was completely new. There were virtually no thrift stores, yard sales, or classified ads, and buying “used” was not an option for the typical family. Since then, the franchise has experienced tremendous growth. There are now 21 stores throughout Portugal with only a few potential locations still available. “With Portugal virtually sold out, our next area of growth in Europe is into Spain,” comments Sloan.
Congratulations to Susana Pedroso and her team!
HUNTERSVILLE, NC – The Kid to Kid franchise proudly awards the Kid to Kid Store of the Month for September to owner Erin Martin of the Huntersville Kid to Kid store. The Store of the Month award is given to a franchise store that has shown outstanding performance and customer satisfaction.
For the month of September, the Huntersville Kid to Kid was selected from more than 100 stores because of their increases in invoices and sales as well as their dedication to customer satisfaction. The Huntersville store has seen invoices increase by 32 percent while sales increased by 64 percent from last year. These numbers show that the Erin and her team are bringing in more of the products their customers want.
Erin attributes much of her success to applying new things she’s learned at the company’s Annual Meeting, quarterly performance groups and from visiting other stores. “Each time I attend a meeting or visit another store, I find 10 or 15 things that we can improve upon,” said Erin. The Huntersville team has also made improvements to their buying process by reviewing items brought in by customers while they are in the store shopping. This has made a big difference in efficiency and in customer satisfaction.
Another big focus has been on improving employee morale. Erin has placed a heavy emphasis on building the team and improving employee satisfaction which has significantly resulted in reduced turnover and increased efficiency. Fun things like a monthly contest keep the staff motivated and goal focused.
Congratulations to Erin and her whole team!
SALT LAKE CITY, UT – The Kid to Kid franchise proudly awards the Store of the Month for August to the Salt Lake Kid to Kid store. The Store of the Month award is given to a franchise store that has shown outstanding performance and customer satisfaction. The franchise advisory board selected the Salt Lake Kid to Kid from more than 100 stores because of their year-over-year increase in sales and for their consistent utilization of the franchise system management tools.
The management tools help franchise owners and managers with setting daily and monthly goals, marking down inventory and keeping the racks full, which is the Salt Lake store’s primary focus. “Using these books and binders is the key to consistently getting things done right,” says Holly Aguero, Salt Lake Kid to Kid District Manager. “My Store Manager, Chanda Wilson, ensures that her team follows the systems. This makes it possible for her to get everything done even when we get slammed.”
As a franchise flagship store and new franchisee training center, the Salt Lake Kid to Kid first opened at its current location on the corner of 2100 South 700 East in 2006. Since then, the store has helped over 40,000 local families stretch their budget by selling and shopping gently used clothing, baby gear and toys. “It’s a perfect system of families helping families,” commented Salt Lake store owner and franchise founder Shauna Sloan. “When parents bring in things to sell, they can be assured that their items will be used by local kids who need and want them.”
Items not purchased have the option of being donated to any one of the local charities. Donations from the Salt Lake Kid to Kid customers amount to over 50,000 items a year making a big impact to the kids served by these organizations.
ROCHESTER, NY – The Kid to Kid franchise proudly awards the Kid to Kid Store of the Month for July to Lena Golubkov in Rochester, New York. Selected from over 100 Kid to Kid franchise locations, the Rochester store is recognized for consistent year over year growth in invoices and sales. In addition, Rochester increased purchasing product from families in the community.
No stranger to business ownership, Lena built a successful salon after emigrating from Ukraine 24 years ago with little more than the clothes on her back. As with her salon business, she has focused on customer service and product selection to grow one customer at a time.
Lena teaches her customers how to prepare their kids’ clothes and toys so they can earn the most money when they sell to Kid to Kid. “I want to teach my customers how to save money. If I can help them save money, my business will grow and that’s a win-win situation,” explained Lena.
Just in time for back-to-school shopping, Lena and her staff make it easy for parents to shop and find the things their kids need and want by keeping the store organized and full of top quality product. “It’s amazing how much a family can save at Kid to Kid,” said Lena. “They can buy all the things their kids need at up to 80% off retail prices, and they can earn money selling the things their kids don’t need.” With Kid to Kid’s sister concept, Uptown Cheapskate, located next store, parents can shop for their teens heading back to school. Uptown Cheapskate specializes in new and like-new name brand clothes, shoes, jewelry and handbags for teens and young adults.
ROCKVILLE, MD – The Kid to Kid franchise proudly awards the Kid to Kid Store of the Month for June to Leily Kiani in Rockville, Maryland. This award is presented to a store that has shown impressive performance and/or improvement. The Rockville Kid to Kid store has been open a little over a year and has grown in leaps and bounds. In June, their first month with year over year comparison, sales increased by an amazing 146% placing this rookie store in the top 20% for the entire Kid to Kid system.
Leily credits the franchise staff, the Kid to Kid community and her team for the success: “I love the BaseCamp Franchising support staff. I attribute much of my success to the Kid to Kid franchise formula—it works. The Kid to Kid owners are a wealth of knowledge as well. It’s so great to know that you are not alone and that you can count on them to tell you their experience.” As for her team she brags, “I like working with every one of them, and they enjoy working with each other. That clearly shows to the customers who are responded by shopping often and telling their friends.”
Before becoming a Kid to Kid franchisee, Leily worked full-time in Corporate Customer and Client Services for over 20 year in various high-level positions. However, she wasn’t happy. She wanted her own business where she could manage the way she wanted and at the same time, help out her community. “Although I have been working really long hours, I’m enjoying myself,” said Leily. “I’ve done corporate work for so long. I’m now having fun!”
