KID TO KID IN ARLINGTON AWARDED STORE OF THE MONTH, CELEBRATES 20 YEARS IN BUSINESS

ARLINGTON, TX—March 8, 2016— Kid to Kid in Arlington, owned by local entrepreneur Debbie Farrar, was awarded Store of the Month for February, just weeks before celebrating it’s 20th anniversary. Through this award, the Kid to Kid franchise recognizes outstanding achievement exhibited by one of its more than 100 children’s resale locations across the United States, Canada, and Portugal. One major factor that contributed to the Arlington store’s success was its consistent growth, despite being in the same market under the same management for 13 years.

“The Arlington store is a shining model of what a Kid to Kid store should be like – just on a super grand scale!” commented Kid to Kid founder, Shauna Sloan. “The organization, merchandising and product selection (both new and used) are superior – which is clearly the driving factor behind a sales increase of 29%,” she said.

At 15,000 square feet, the Arlington location is the largest in the system and has consistently ranked #1 in sales every year since Farrar purchased the store in 2003. Farrar and her team constantly push the limits of what is possible for the franchise, and with their strict focus on organization, efficiency, and innovation, they continuously reach new milestones unprecedented by any other store in the system.

Farrar says when she purchased the 7 year-old store in 2003, she “never looked back.” Having worked in the children’s resale industry for a number of years, Farrar knew she loved the business and jumped at the opportunity to work for herself. “I love being able to help families and kids have nice things,” she said. “I was a substitute teacher for years and with four children of my own, I couldn’t stand for kids to get made fun of at school when they didn’t have name brand clothing.” She saw the importance the resale clothing business was to her community in allowing families to find good quality clothing, toys and baby equipment at an affordable price.

Not long after purchasing the store, the local school district approached Farrar and asked her to carry school uniforms when a major retailer in town went out of businesses. Feeling this would be a good way to serve the community, Farrar added 1,000 square feet to the business to carry uniforms, and the sales followed. Farrar enlarged the store three times before finally moving to a larger location in January of this year, becoming the world’s largest Kid to Kid.

In addition to the growing store, Farrar expanded into other areas of the Dallas/Fort Worth market. In 2005, she opened another Kid to Kid location in Burleson, and then in 2013, she purchased the failing Weatherford location and completely turned it around. Farrar expanded even further that same year by opening the sister store, Uptown Cheapskate, a fashion resale store for teens and young adults.

When asked what Farrar loves most about owning a Kid to Kid store, she didn’t hesitate, “I love the employees, customers and other Kid to Kid owners,” she said. “I employ more than 70 employees between the four stores, and I feel I have a lot to teach them as they journey through their lives with our company or other businesses.” Farrar also loves that by owning her own stores, she is able to keep it a family business and work with her husband and children each day.

MULTI-STORE KID TO KID OWNER WINS STORE OF THE MONTH FOR DECEMBER

Portraits made by Sara Caldwell for The Augusta Magazine on Friday, September 13, 2013.

Portraits made by Sara Caldwell for The Augusta Magazine on Friday, September 13, 2013.

EVANS, GA—January 21, 2016—BaseCamp Franchising is pleased to award the Kid to Kid Store of the Month award for December to Shannon Unger, owner of the Evans Kid to Kid location. Through this award, the Kid to Kid franchise recognizes outstanding achievement exhibited by one of its more than 100 children’s resale locations across the United States, Canada, and Portugal. Unger’s store continually ranks among the top three Kid to Kid locations for sales every year due to her strong management skills, her love of the business, and her genuine compassion for the people she serves.

One of the most impressive successes of the Evans store is its continuous growth. Sales were up 21 percent in December, and it attracted more than 400 new customers despite the fact that the store has been open for 10 years. This is a testament to the impact Unger’s store makes in her community each day, allowing thousands of families to stretch their budgets without sacrificing style or quality. “Shannon is winning Store of the Month because she does amazing things with her management skills, and serves the community in a very significant way,” said Shauna Sloan, founder of Kid to Kid.

Unger says the best part of being a Kid to Kid owner is she gets to do what she loves while being there for her family. “I love my life!” she said. “I get to work with great people and help out the community at the same time. It’s fun to provide a service for families and individuals who are looking for a great deal on fashionable clothes. And the items we don’t sell we donate to local charities. It just feels good.”

Unger first opened her store in Evans in 2006, and has become one of the top franchisees in the Kid to Kid system. “As a single mom of five kids, I understand how expensive it can be to raise a growing family,” Unger said. When her Evans location grew so busy that she worried about being able to properly serve the community, she opened another Kid to Kid store in Augusta. Between the two stores and her two Uptown Cheapskate stores (a buy and sell fashion exchange for teens and young adults), she benefits thousands of families each year.

“Shannon is really a leader in our franchise system,” said Sloan. “She not only ranks in the top spots for sales for both Kid to Kid and Uptown Cheapskate, but she continually imparts her knowledge and experience to other franchisees to improve the entire brand. She is an inspiring business owner, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to award her with the Store of the Month designation.”

KID TO KID SANDY WINS STORE OF THE MONTH

LOCAL FAMILY-OWNED STORE WINS STORE OF THE MONTH

_DSC8588

SANDY, UT—January 8, 2016—Kid to Kid in Sandy, Utah, owned by Holly and Rob Aguero, a local family-owned franchise was selected from over 100 Kid to Kid stores across the United States, Portugal, and Canada to receive the Kid to Kid Store of the Month award for November 2015. Although the Agueros have only owned the Sandy Kid to Kid for less than a year, they have already made notable changes in the store and management of the staff that are resulting in significantly improved customer experiences.

One of the reasons the Sandy location was chosen for the award was its impressive growth. Sales for November were up 28 percent.  Over the past year they have been working on a complete remodel of the store which has included new flooring, slat wall and floor resets, and new fixtures. These additions have allowed for a dramatic  increase in the selection of gently used children’s clothes,  maternity wear, toys and baby gear.

The Agueros attribute much of their early successes to experience and management style. Unlike many new franchises, the Agueros have experience in the children’s industry and children’s retail. Rob held the role of National Sales Manager for Boon Inc/Keen Distribution and Holly worked in management for national retailers “Giggle” and “Right Start” before moving to Utah to manage the Kid to Kid store in Salt Lake. Holly loved the feel of the Kid to Kid franchise so much that when the opportunity arose, she and her husband Rob (who actively manages marketing and social media for the store) purchased the Sandy location – which was the original Kid to Kid store in the whole franchise.

Franchise founder Shauna Sloan comments, “Holly is one of the best managers I’ve ever seen.  She understands what’s important and conveys that to her team.”  Aguero credits her employees for her success. “I’ve managed employees for 13 years, and I’ve never before had a team so motivated, dependable, hardworking, and great with customers.” Though she feels lucky to have found such wonderful employees (several of whom are still teenagers), Aguero’s strategy in managing her employees really stood out among Kid to Kid franchises. She sets clear expectations each day and holds the team accountable. Each employee knows their task and doesn’t deviate, resulting in increased efficiencies and streamlined processes. Aguero said she focuses on treating the employees well, recognizing and utilizing their personal strengths and reinforces a sense of team daily.  This attitude quickly translated to the customers, and more and more customers are noticing how friendly and helpful the staff has become.

The Agueros purchased the Sandy location in April of 2015. In Holly’s eyes, running the children’s resale store has been the most rewarding businesses decision they could have made. “I love it,” she said. “It’s been the best thing for our family. I work fewer hours each week than when I worked for other companies. I get to spend so much more time with my husband and 2 year-old daughter.” On top of the extra time free time, Aguero said one of the best parts of owning a Kid to Kid franchise is how fulfilling it is to work for herself, “I love seeing the results of my own work. Before, I’ve always worked for someone else, but now I get to really see my full potential as a business owner. It’s a very satisfying feeling.”

Store of the Month for October 2015: The Woodlands, Texas

THE WOODLANDS, TX—November 16, 2015—Local business owner Donna Gylling and her staff at The Woodlands Kid to Kid store were honored with the Kid to Kid Store of the Month award for October. Through this award, the Kid to Kid franchise recognizes one of its 115 locations across the United States, Canada, and Portugal for outstanding achievement.

Donna began her store in February 2005 when her two girls were ages 4 and 8. She says she’d always been a big resale shopper, and that she received lots of compliments on the outfits she found for her girls. “People were always surprised when they found out that my kids wore resale clothes,” Donna recalls. “After I opened a Kid to Kid store, my friends would often say, ‘Oh, this is what resale looks like?’”

Kid to Kid of The Woodlands buys an average of 2,200 gently used children’s items per week from the community, paying its customers for their clothes, baby equipment, toys, books, shoes, and maternity wear. The store then sells these items at up to 70% off of their original retail prices. By helping parents and grandparents recycle their kids’ outgrown stuff, Kid to Kid of The Woodlands provides value to those who sell and to those who shop for their growing kids. In addition, this reduces the amount of waste in the community.

Over the last decade, Donna raised her family as she built a successful store. “My work never gets boring,” Donna reflects. “It really surprises me that even after ten and a half years, every day is something new.” Owning a store is hard work, she says, but it gives her the flexibility to actively participate in her daughters’ lives. She is grateful for a fantastic staff that shares her vision for providing excellent customer service. “The staff here truly wants to provide the best for our customers. We work to offer our community an experience that can’t be found anywhere else, and our staff does a fantastic job.” Remarkably, the first employee Donna hired at Kid to Kid is still faithfully working in her store. Donna and her team are thrilled to be awarded the Kid to Kid Store of the Month.

Store of the Month for September 2015: Pittsburgh, Pennyslvania

Exterior picture

PITTSBURGH, PA—October 15, 2015—Local business owners Whitney and Mary Jo Hayes, along with their staff at the Pittsburgh Kid to Kid store, were honored this month with the Kid to Kid Store of the Month award. Through this award, the Kid to Kid franchise recognizes outstanding achievement exhibited by one of its 112 locations across the United States, Canada, and Portugal. Although the Pittsburgh Kid to Kid has only been open for less than a year, it is already proving to be a great success for the community it serves.

When asked what factors contributed to the store’s success, Whitney responded that first and foremost it has been “hard work.” The Kid to Kid store in Pittsburgh buys an average of 459 gently used items each day from the community, paying its customers more than $20,000 on average each month for their children’s clothes, baby equipment, toys, books, shoes, and maternity wear. The store then turns around and sells these items at up to 70% off of their original retail prices. By helping parents and grandparents recycle their outgrown kids stuff, Kid to Kid of Pittsburgh provides value both to those who sell and to those who shop for their growing kids as it reduces the amount of waste in the community.

Whitney and Mary Jo are creating a customer experience that is driving positive feedback from those they serve. One customer, upon first interacting with Whitney in the store, stated that she “could not have been nicer or more helpful.” Another customer, after trying out the store for a few months, concluded, “I must say I have never been disappointed… I’ve bought over $600 worth of [clothes] for under $65.” In addition, the Hayes have built a fantastic team. According to one customer, “The staff is so friendly, which makes the experience of shopping 10 times better… I don’t think I can say one bad thing about this place!” The store’s clientele is not failing to notice the store’s key strengths in providing service and driving value.

Store of the Month for August 2015: St. George, Utah

IMG_0301

This month, the Kid to Kid franchise awarded the August Store of the Month designation to Dustin and Mandy Taylor, owners of the St. George Kid to Kid. Through the Store of the Month award, the franchise recognizes particular excellence demonstrated by one of its 112 locations across the United States, Canada, and Portugal. During the month of August, the St. George Kid to Kid showed an impressive sales increase for a tenured Kid to Kid store, as well as a 38% increase in the number of items it purchased from parents in the local community.

Kid to Kid buys and sells gently used children’s items, such as clothing, shoes, toys, books, and baby equipment, as well as maternity apparel. According to the Taylors, what their customers love most about the store is that they can purchase great items in like-new condition that are otherwise unavailable in St. George. “There are not a lot of places to shop in St. George,” says Mandy, “so usually you have to shop online or drive to Las Vegas [to buy specialty children’s items]. Many parents get these items outside of St. George, use them a few times, and then bring them to us—making our store a place where people can see and feel the items before they buy them.” Snow boots, for example, are a great selling item at Kid to Kid, because it’s one of the few places in St. George where parents can bring their kids to actually try on the boots before they buy them.

Nine years ago, Dustin and Mandy hadn’t even considered owning a children’s store. They were looking into opening an assisted living business, and came across Kid to Kid in a list of businesses for sale in the area. What attracted them most to the business, according to Dustin, was the recycle aspect—the  sustainability and waste reduction were what convinced him to buy the store. “The Deseret Industries store refers people to us for the things like baby equipment that they would throw away,” Mandy adds, “so it’s nice to keep that out of the waste, and help somebody buy it who couldn’t otherwise afford it.”

On top of benefiting parents who shop and sell, the St. George Kid to Kid does a lot to serve in its community. The store gives clothes it can’t sell to the IHC Foundation, and it donates to the local YMCA and the Children’s Museum each time customers choose not to take a bag with their purchase. It also donates resources to support Meals on Wheels for pets, the Parent Teacher Association, and local schools. According to a member of Kid to Kid’s advisory board, “Dustin and Mandy are very aware of what’s happening in their community and are constantly looking for ways to be involved in areas that will make a difference.”

The Taylors attributed the success of their store to their fantastic staff, who they said are constantly willing to go above and beyond the call of duty, and to their diverse product offering.  “Even moms who typically don’t shop resale will come into our store simply because they know Kid to Kid has the best bow selection in town,” explains Mandy.  They offer much more than just used clothes, and have quite an impressive selection of new items, including hair accessories and toys.

Store of the month for July 2015: Arvada, Colorado

IMG_0898ARVADA, CO—August 20, 2015— Kid to Kid Arvada, Colorado has been awarded Store of the Month in July by the Kid to Kid Franchise System. The franchise offered its congratulations to owners Todd and Miriam Frick and their team in Arvada on their second award as the store was previously awarded Store of the Month in October of 2013. The Fricks attribute their success to their well-trained and hard-working staff that took on extra responsibility as the Fricks spent a large portion of their time getting their third business, Uptown Cheapskate Centennial, up and running.

Todd and Miriam gave special recognition to their manager, Amanda Funnell. According to Miriam, “Amanda is truly an amazing leader. She fosters such a great work atmosphere that the staff is happy and clearly having fun while they work.” Amanda’s focus on training and efficiency, as well as building team morale, encouraged each employee to engage in the business’s success. This, combined with a successful Semi-Annual Sale, led to a 20 percent increase in sales in July.

“It is a tremendous achievement for a single store to win Store of the Month twice in two years,” said Shauna Sloan, founder of Kid to Kid. “The team in Arvada does a fantastic job, and they deserve it.” Kid to Kid, an upscale resale franchise for kids’ clothing, toys and baby equipment, now has more than 100 locations in the United States, Portugal and Canada.

The Fricks are now proud owners of Kid to Kid Aurora, Kid to Kid Arvada, and the franchise’s sister concept for teen and young adult apparel, Uptown Cheapskate Centennial.

“The Fricks are great examples of both of our franchises, and we appreciate the great work they do,” said Sloan.

Store of the month for June 2015: Lexington, Kentucky

Store Front 2_LexingtonThe Kid to Kid Franchise proudly awarded its Store of the Month award for June to the owners of Kid to Kid in Lexington, Kentucky, Jason and Molly Newland. The Lexington Kid to Kid store was selected from more than 100 franchisees across the U.S. and Portugal for their 32 percent increase in sales and continued effort to improve their store through offering more in-demand products and providing great customer service.

As many parents begin to shop for back-to-school, the Newlands and their staff keep their store fully-stocked with hundreds, sometimes thousands, of items every day. “You could shop at our store every day and find something new at affordable prices,” said Molly. “We see families who come into our store and get so excited to find complete wardrobes for their little ones without spending a fortune.”

Before owning Kid to Kid, the Newlands wanted to run a business of their own for some time. When the Lexington Kid to Kid store became available, the Newlands seized the opportunity. “When we first found out that the Kid to Kid store in our area was for sale, we saw that it had a lot of potential for growth,” said Molly. “After finding out about the support the franchise offers, it felt like it was the right move for us and our family.”

The Newlands give credit for their success to their dedicated, hard-working staff. “The number one key to our success is our hard-working team members who provide excellent customer service,” said Molly, “And our manager, Mitzie Arnold, is great at keeping everyone motivated and on task.”

When the Newlands aren’t busy making sure their store is in top shape, they enjoy traveling, camping, golfing and spending time with their three daughters, ages five, eight, and ten.

Store of the Month for May 2015: Setubal, Portugal

SetubalThe Kid to Kid franchise is excited to award the Store of the Month award for May to owners Rita and Diogo Madaleno of the Kid to Kid in Setubal, Portugal. The Kid to Kid Setubal store was selected from more than 100 franchise stores across the U.S. and Portugal for outstanding sales performance.

Even though it is located in one of the poorest parts of the Lisbon area, the Setubal Kid to Kid franchise is posting strong sales as they serve the community buying and selling the best things kids outgrow. “The Madalenos have succeeded in creating a very successful Kid to Kid store despite significant challenges in the past year,” said Shauna Sloan, founder of Kid to Kid.

Within a year after the Madalenos opened their Kid to Kid store in Setubal, a new mall opened across town which impacted all retail stores within the surrounding areas. Taking a proactive approach, the Madalenos relocated their store closer to the mall to a much larger space (4500 square feet) – and they did it in a record 5 days’ time. In the first full month in the new store, the Setubal store’s sales ranking jumped from 13th to 3rd in Portugal as total sales increased by 99 percent.

“As soon as we moved to the new location, which is much more visible and convenient, we immediately saw an increase in the number of customers who are discovering the benefits of shopping and selling at Kid to Kid,” said Diogo Madeleno. “In addition to tens of thousands of gently used clothing, toys, and baby gear, we have plenty of affordable new products like carseats and other baby equipment.”

Rita and Diogo are the parents of 4 growing children ages 3 to 13.  “As parents, we understand the importance of watching the family budget and that’s what attracted us to the Kid to Kid franchise,” said Rita Madaleno. “We are so happy that we can provide our community with affordable high quality items families need.”

The Setubal Kid to Kid is the Madaleno’s second store. They opened their first store in the Expo area of Lisbon.
