CHATTANOOGA, TN—September 21, 2016— Kid to Kid in Chattanooga, owned by mother and son, Lyn and Justin Shepherd, has been awarded Store of the Month for August 2016. Through this award, the Kid to Kid franchise recognizes outstanding achievement exhibited by one of its more than 100 children’s resale locations across the United States, Canada, and Portugal. As one of three Kid to Kid stores in Tennessee, Kid to Kid Chattanooga has experienced significant growth– with sales up 16% in August and 21% year-over-year.

One of the reasons for the store’s continued success is their community outreach and involvement. Lyn and Justin are involved in many efforts, including social media. “We have done frequent posts that include videos, slideshows, contests and even goofy staff photos,” said Lyn. Their fans and customers are noticing. The store recently advertised their annual Costume Event on their Facebook page and hundreds of customers came out. A live stream video was also shared on their page during the event.

When asked about the store’s success, Lyn said, “Our store is dedicated to showing love to our community. We have been involved in many community events from schools, foster care, military, and most recently to raise some money for fire relief. Our prayer is that we make a difference in the lives of those we meet.”

The Shepherds have been making a difference. Though miles away, they stepped up to help their former community in California when tragedy struck recently. A wildfire spread through the small area of Lower Lake affecting more than 300 residents, many without insurance. Last week Kid to Kid Chattanooga donated 10% of their store’s sales to those affected.

Lyn and Justin look forward to continuing to impact the community in the future and are grateful to be honored as store of the month. “We are thrilled to receive this honor. Though we are small, this team works together to keep improving,” said Lyn.

SALT LAKE CITY, UT—July 20, 2016—Kid to Kid and Uptown Cheapskate resale stores have partnered with buildOn, a non-profit organization that works with under-served communities around the world, to raise funds to build schools in impoverished countries. Store locations all across the United States have raised $164,158 through a Charity Fill-A-Bag event, earning enough to build schools in Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso, Nicaragua and Haiti.

To date, three of the five schools have already been completed in West Africa, and more than 250 students have been attending classes for several months. Each of the completed schools were built in communities with fewer than 50 percent literacy rates, and children were walking miles to attend schools made of little more than straw and sticks. Now, each new school accommodates up to 150 kids and features two classrooms, a sturdy roof, latrines, and classroom supplies.

The Charity Fill-A-Bag event is unique to Kid to Kid and Uptown Cheapskate. The model converts products that would have otherwise been disposed of through a donation process into cash that can be used to fund philanthropic efforts by buildOn. Vendors selling clothes to either Kid to Kid or Uptown Cheapskate are given the option to donate their clothes to the sale. Then, for a $15 donation to buildOn, customers were given a shopping bag to fill with as much specially-marked product as they could stuff in the bag. These semi-annual events have been wildly successful in raising funds for the organization. To create an ongoing impact, the stores also offer customers the option to forgo a plastic bag in exchange for a $.05 donation to buildOn.

“We sought an organization that made a lasting, tangible difference, and buildOn does just that.   We’ve sent team members out to participate in the construction of these schools, and they’ve seen first-hand the impact,” said Scott Sloan, CEO. “Involving the communities in our stores through our Charity Fill-A-Bag has been a win for everybody. Community members recycle items they no longer need, our franchise locations convert that donation to cash through our Charity Fill-A-Bag event, and buildOn uses that money to transform under-served communities by providing lasting education opportunities for their children. We couldn’t be happier with the results,” he said.

BuildOn works in partnership with the ministry of education in each country and the local village to provide the new schools. Villagers work alongside skilled buildOn project supervisors and engineers to construct their school with materials provided by buildOn. The village must also agree to send girls to school in equal numbers with boys for gender balance and equality. The next school funded by Kid to Kid and Uptown Cheapskate is scheduled to break ground in Haiti on August 8th, with another in Nicaragua on October 2nd.

Kid to Kid buys and sells new and gently used children’s and maternity clothes, toys, books, and baby gear. Uptown Cheapskate targets the young adult market and buys and sells new and like-new name brand clothes, shoes, jewelry and handbags.

Rochester-Yelena Golubkov

ROCHESTER, NY—June 23, 2016— Kid to Kid in Rochester, owned by local entrepreneur Lena Golubkov, was awarded Store of the Month for May 2016. Through this award, the Kid to Kid franchise recognizes outstanding achievement exhibited by one of its more than 100 children’s resale locations across the United States, Canada, and Portugal. Kid to Kid Rochester saw a sales increase of 13 percent in May, as well as 17 percent more customers.

When asked the secret to her success, Lena didn’t hesitate. “I just follow the franchise system,” she said. Each month she diligently reads the priorities recommended by BaseCamp Franchising, Kid to Kid’s parent company, and does her best to follow them. “It really works. My store isn’t perfect, but with BaseCamp’s help, I’m always improving.”

Having immigrated from Ukraine 26 years ago with $180 in her pocket and a desire for a better life, Lena’s is a true “American Dream” story. She worked any job she could find, from landscaping to cleaning, and eventually saved enough money to open a spa/salon. Eventually, the Kid to Kid franchise caught her eye. “I loved the concept, and after meeting Kid to Kid founders Brent and Shauna Sloan, I was really impressed with their intelligence and how they built the businesses. I knew I wanted to own a Kid to Kid.”

When she purchased her Rochester Kid to Kid location in 2011, she had developed the skills needed to provide outstanding customer service and a great product selection. “Lena is an outstanding example of tenacity in entrepreneurship, having overcome many personal challenges to create a better life through store ownership,” said Shauna Sloan.

“Owning a Kid to Kid is hard work, but I love it,” Lena said. The store saw huge gains in May by placing an added emphasis on organization and inventory. With an improved product selection, customers were able to find exactly what they wanted, resulting in higher sales for the store.

As much as Lena loves the business aspect of running her store, her favorite part of owning a Kid to Kid is the children. “I just love being able to watch them grow. It feels so rewarding to provide this amazing service to families so they can afford nice things and improve their lives,” she said.

Winner of Store of the Year: Kid to Kid Arvada

DSC03270

ARVADA, CO—June 3, 2016—Todd and Miriam Frick (Colorado) are the typical ‘atypical’ entrepreneurial couple with four kids, a couple of pets, one Uptown Cheapskate resale store location, and two Kid to Kid stores in Arvada and Aurora.   This year, they’ll also be known as the winners of the Kid to Kid Store of the Year Award for 2015.

“Kid to Kid’s Store of the Year is the most prestigious award in our company,” said Kid to Kid franchise founder Shauna Sloan.  “Each year, more than 100 stores compete for this title, which encompasses not just strong financial performance, but commitment to the Kid to Kid mission of being the best of kid’s resale. The Arvada location is our best example of what a Kid to Kid store should be – an amazing experience for customers, for employees, and for our owners.”

The Fricks have excelled at building an amazing store experience from the time they purchased their first Kid to Kid store location in Aurora in 2008.  Together, the duo built the Aurora Kid to Kid to recycle more than 140,000 gently used kid’s items annually – paying families cash for quality clothing, toys, and equipment, and offering those items to families at a discount.  Todd attributes much of their success to his and Miriam’s work ethic.  “Sticking to the franchise model and working hard is what got us here.  The franchise has a great model and once we learned what to do we adapted it to fit our store, systems and customers.  We focused on the big picture; keeping the store full of great product, back stocking inventory for when we needed it and providing a great customer experience all year long. “

After succeeding in Aurora, the Fricks extended their reach to open their second Kid to Kid in Arvada in August 2012.  This time, they built a bigger store to better serve the Arvada community.  According to Yelp, customers love the play area, the great exchange values, and the availability of baby equipment at a discount.  Miriam Frick attributes the great reviews to her manager and store team. She said, “I think the atmosphere in our store is full of happiness and positive energy.  Our staff love their jobs and pass that excitement on to customers whether intentional or not. I also think we have an exceptional variety in our selection.  People find what they are looking for and what they didn’t know they were looking for.”

As they look forward to what’s next, the couple isn’t ready to stop anytime soon.  Todd and Miriam are now working with their store managers to help them become owners of their own Kid to Kid stores.  “No, it doesn’t threaten me,” said Todd.  “Store ownership has been a wonderful thing for us, and I’m excited at the prospect of growing Kid to Kid in Colorado and for the opportunity it gives my managers to live their dreams.”

Miriam agrees.  “We don’t know how we’ll grow next,” said Miriam.  “But we do know that we’ll continue providing the same level of service to our customers as we expand.  We couldn’t have done this without all the people who buy from us and sell to us.  They’re amazing.”

“I just love what Kid to Kid allows us to do each day,” said Todd Frick.  “We provide a refreshing difference from the usual thrift/consign or resale experience. I’m able to help parents equip their kids for less money, and pay money directly to parents for their outgrown items.  Kid to Kid makes a meaningful difference to our customers as they participate in helping us give back on a daily basis.  Every parent, whether they’re rich or struggling, can be a part of Kid to Kid.”

2015 Kid to Kid Store of the Year runners-up were Rockville, Maryland and Summerlin, Nevada.
